Summer is over!

Summer flew by this year, and I can't believe we are about to start a brand new school year next week!!  This summer was definitely the best summer I've ever had! My boyfriend Austin and I traveled all over the New England area.  Here are a few highlights of my amazing summer!!

We took my miniature dachshund, Stanley, up to New Hampshire with us! He is a great flyer! :)
Austin and I traveled to Franconia, NH for some beautiful, breathtaking mountains and sights.

I hiked a mountain!! It took 6 hours, but it was AWESOME. it was the most exhilarating feeling when I got to the top! Girl power!!

My family reunion was outstanding! Lots and lots of fun to see everyone!

Austin and I went to Montreal, Quebec for about 4 days. It was so much fun! Here is a picture of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Best of all, we got to spend a lot of time with Austin's family.  They are so wonderful!

Looking forward to starting off a brand new, awesome school year! It is always very exciting getting to know the new kiddos! Can't wait!

Classes merge!

As these last few days are coming to an end, I think we can all get a little stir crazy!  In order to liven things up a bit, my pal Mrs. Howdyshell and I decided to merge our classes for a little reading activity!  The kids all had a really great time working with the 2nd graders.

The 2nd graders brought their favorite book and read it to my students.

Then they had to work together to draw the characters and the setting.

We had a lot of fun, too! ;)

Here are the two classes and their finished products!

It was a great morning!  These Kindergarten students are really looking like 1st Graders to me now!  <3, Ms. W

Happy Mother's Day!

This past month, we have been growing our herbs and flowers in the milk cartons.  Last Friday, the students brought home their Sweet Basil and Marigolds to give to their moms for Mother's Day.  It was very fun to see the growth of the plants over the whole month.  Hopefully, they will continue to take care of them at home!  :)

Mr. Fast

Well, the time has come to let our precious butterfly go!  A few days ago, "Mr. Fast" popped out of the cocoon and started flying around the butterfly cage!  The students were so, so excited to watch the whole life cycle occur.  We fed Mr. Fast sugar water and some fruit for a few days while he strengthened his wings.  Finally, today we let him go in the butterfly garden.  Here are a few pictures of Mr. Fast before he flew away!

We have a caterpillar, named "Mr. Slow", who still hasn't gotten into his cocoon yet.  (Hence the name) :) I guess we will see about Mr. Slow after the weekend!
Thanks for reading!

How to Catch a Star

Today we read the story "How to Catch a Star" by Oliver Jeffers.  The students loved this story!

After the story, my students wrote about how they would catch a star.  We are working on remembering that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with some kind of punctuation mark. In this case... a period.

Here are a few examples of the stories the students created!
Kasey's story

Dakota's story

We hope to fill the bulletin board with more creative writing stories!

Earth Day!

Yesterday for Earth Day, we did quite a few activities in the classroom and around the school.  We made "Garbage Monsters", watched an Earth Day video, read "Bisuit's Earth Day Celebration".  Our writing topic was "My Earth Day Promise".

In the afternoon, we did a tour of our schools garden.  In the garden, we are growing carrots, brocolli, green beans and corn.  We got to really explore the growing plants.

Broccoli
Corn

Carrots

It was a very exciting day!  The students learned a lot about taking care of the Earth.  When they left at the end of the day, we ended with "Earth Day is Everyday!"

Caterpillars and butterflies

During our springtime unit, we have been learning a lot about the life cycle of a butterfly. I decided to order live caterpillars from www.insectlore.com. The students are able to see the caterpillars eating and growing and changing! It is very exciting.

One of our caterpillars has already made his chrysalis.

The first cocoon should pop open in about a week!
